Tanya & Brian's 1971 Triumph Stag Mk 1
(Tanya Duke and Brian Novakovski)

The Triumph Stag was designed by Michelotti in the late 60s and was launched in 1970 with the Triumph V8 engine. It sports a classic T-bar to strengthen the body shell. It is now a popular classic car in the UK with a strong support system.

Only about 2,700 federal LHD versions were sent to the USA, but not Canada, for 3 years making it a rare car on this continent. Many Stags have had the original engine replaced, especially with the Rover V8 option.

In 2012, we bought our 3-speed automatic Stag in Kelowna after being inspired to looking at British classic convertible cars by a fellow club member. The bodywork was sound with a change of colour from Sienna brown to Signal red. The engine was the original Triumph V8 and had been rebuilt in 2009. The odometer was recorded as 0 miles on the engine rebuild invoice. It has done 21,000 miles in the time we have owned it.

It now has the much coveted 4-speed automatic transmission change making it an excellent cruising vehicle. It’s cooling system has been upgraded from an internal water pump to a Ford external water pump now positioned low down on the engine, avoiding most of the overheating problems. Many other changes have been done, too many to list here. It is currently undergoing a upholstery colour change to better match the current body colour.

We drove the car on many SSCC trips and in 2023, drove it from Saskatoon to Vancouver Island where it now lives, and unfortunately won’t be at the Brits by the Bess car show in 2025.
